Soak dried beans overnight in salted water.

Rinse and drain the beans. Transfer them to a heavy-bottomed vessel like a bean pot or Dutch oven.

Add salt, garlic powder and other seasonings, and cover. Set the pot on medium-high heat and bring to a boil.

Once the beans reach a rolling boil, remove the lid and stir down the foam.
